The intimacy of a waiting room is unlike anything else.

Somebody you would never speak to on a bus tells you which vein they always get first time, which of the nurses is worth requesting, and how long the car park gives you before it charges again.

Then their name is called and you never see them again.

These are not friendships and it would be strange to call them that. They are something rarer — people met entirely without pretence, because the situation had already removed that option from both of you.
