Blockages are rarely dramatic. Mostly they look like a small joke made at exactly the moment someone says something kind, the compliment deflected before it can land, the thank-you turned into a shrug.

Whatever built that habit built it for a reason. Somewhere it was safer not to need anything from anyone. That is not a flaw to be ashamed of. It is old engineering doing its job long after the danger passed.

Removing it isn't demolition. It is letting one sentence in without editing it. Someone says you were good to them, and you say only: thank you. Then you sit in how uncomfortable that is for a few seconds.
