Somebody got up in the night for you, over and over, during a stretch you have no memory of at all. Hundreds of nights. You will never be able to picture a single one.

That is the odd arrangement of early care. The effort is heaviest exactly where the record is blank, and it gets paid forward rather than back, which is the only currency it accepts.

If there are things to say, they are better said early than said perfectly. And if the relationship is complicated, the specific care you did receive is still yours to keep.
