Care there doesn't mean warmth and doesn't mean pretending. It's narrower: not enjoying it when things go badly for them. That turns out to be a hard standard, because a small satisfaction at a difficult person's difficulty is one of the most automatic feelings available.
Nobody has to like everyone. But the moment somebody is filed as beneath consideration, the filing doesn't stay in its box. It teaches a way of looking at people, and it gets used again.
