The mind's favourite move in a bad stretch is to run the whole thing forward — the next appointment, the next bill, the version of next year where it has all gone the worst way, in detail, with dialogue.
Coming back is less mystical than it gets made to sound. It's usually physical: hands in dishwater, cold air on the face at the door, the weight of a bag genuinely in your hand. The body only ever occupies today. Borrowing its address for a few minutes is the whole of the technique.
