Three in the afternoon and the body wants biscuits. Sometimes it genuinely wants biscuits. Sometimes the actual request was ten minutes outdoors, or water, or the end of a conversation you have been in since eleven.

Signals arrive garbled more often than anyone admits, which is why listening is closer to a skill than to a receiver being switched on.

You don't get it right every time by trying harder. You get it right more often by having guessed wrong a hundred times and remembered a few of them. That builds on boring afternoons, not dramatic ones.
