Something kept in good condition is not the same as something new. A boat in condition has been sanded, patched and repainted, hauled out every winter by somebody who knew exactly where the soft spot was.

Bodies are closer to that than to a verdict handed down once. Condition is a relationship — things that need attention, and things that quietly hold. Whatever shape yours is in this morning, some of it is working perfectly and without comment: the blood finding its way, the small repair going on under a plaster you have stopped noticing.
