Income rarely rises the way a graph in a presentation rises. It sits flat for two years and then jumps in a single afternoon — a new job, a rate finally raised, a promotion discussed for months and then settled in a four-minute conversation.

Which makes the flat stretches misleading. They look like nothing happening, and they are mostly where the next step gets built: the skill, the reputation, the person who will later recommend you to someone.

A plateau is not the same as a stop. Almost every jump you have had was preceded by one.
