My life is a gift.

Gifts are for using. The good scarf kept in tissue paper for an occasion that never quite arrives is the failure mode, and plenty of lives are being stored the same way, saved for after the qualification, after the move, after the money is sorted out.

None of which demands gratitude on command. What was given wasn't earned and can't be renewed at the counter, which makes an ordinary Wednesday the actual item rather than the packaging around some better Wednesday further along.
