Something is happening in there anyway. A swim coach can watch a stroke for a month with no visible change, then the catch clicks into place in a single length and stays. That month wasn't preparation for the click. The month *was* the click, distributed thinly.
Practice pays out in lumps rather than instalments. The frustrating stretch before the lump feels identical to wasted time from the inside. The only way to tell them apart is to keep going and find out.
