First chapters often read like endings. Somebody loses the job, or the marriage, or the plan they had organised a decade around, and if you stopped reading there it would be a tragedy.
Nobody gets to read ahead. That is the genuinely hard part and no reassurance fixes it.
What holds is only this: the material is not finished. Whatever this is, it is not the last thing that will happen to you.
Twenty years from now this stretch gets described in a couple of sentences by a person who knows how it went.
