Fear of a feeling is usually larger than the feeling. Grief, rage, the flat grey thing that has no name at all: held off at the door they seem enormous, and let in they turn out to have a shape and a duration.
There is a small experiment for this. Alone in the car, say out loud what you actually feel, in plain language, no editing. Most people find the sentence is shorter than they expected, and that saying it takes something out of the air.
