Every day I am becoming richer and richer.

It's rarely noticed when it happens — the good olive oil going into the basket without a glance at the price. A year earlier that was a decision. It isn't one now.

Getting richer, from the inside, is largely the conversion of decisions into non-decisions. The taxi home. The dentist. The school trip that doesn't require a conversation first.

Almost nobody reports feeling rich. What people report is the absence of particular small frictions, one at a time, usually without noticing which one went.
