Children learn money the way they learn accents: by standing nearby. A father who paid cash for everything and never once explained why. A mother who checked the receipt in the car park, every time, without comment.

None of it is taught deliberately, which is exactly why it feels natural rather than learned. Whatever your instincts around money are, somebody else had them first and you absorbed them at nine years old.

The useful part is that anything absorbed can be looked at. Not overthrown — looked at, once, in daylight, to see whether it's yours or inherited.
