Own terms is a real thing and it comes with a price list. Nobody mentions the absent sick pay, or the phone answered on the third day of a holiday because the alternative is losing a client it took a year to get.
The trade is frequently worth it. People who've made it rarely want to go back.
But it is a trade rather than an escape. You swap a boss for a market, which is more honest and considerably less forgiving.
Terms you set yourself are still terms. The freedom is in having chosen them.
