People who've had a genuinely bad year all end up asking the same question: how much of me was the money? A business folds, a job goes, and for a few months you find out which friendships were arrangements.
Most people come out of that audit better than they feared. The house went. The character didn't.
Which is an odd argument for closeness rather than against it. Money is easier to hold when you're not secretly convinced it's the only thing making you worth knowing.
