There is a moment, before anybody has said anything, when you already know which part of the work is weak. Everyone has it. Most people override it and wait to be told, which costs a week and a certain amount of dignity.

That instrument is internal and it is generally more accurate than the feedback. Praise aimed at the wrong paragraph never quite lands, and you know exactly why.

It does not mean doing everything alone. It means the verdict you are waiting for from outside is usually confirmation of one you have already quietly issued.
