Good things arrive addressed to you and get treated as clerical errors. The promotion was a shortage of candidates. The kind message was politeness. The good year is a run that will have to be paid back at some point.

Receiving fully means letting the thing be for you, without the audit. It turns out to be a physical act more than a mental one — standing still while somebody says something warm, and not filling the silence.

Nobody had to earn arriving. Whatever gave you a life ran no means test first, and nothing since has repealed that.
