Adoration is an unfashionable direction to point. Aimed at a person, a dog, a stretch of coastline, it's admirable. Aimed inward it makes people uneasy, as though there were a fixed supply and any spent on yourself came out of someone else's share.
Watch how a person looks at their dog coming down the stairs. Uncomplicated delight, no assessment attached.
Nothing in that exchange requires the dog to have earned anything. Delight is not a reward system. Turning even a fraction of that untroubled attention on your own existence doesn't make you vain. It makes you harder to knock over.
