I always speak from the heart.

At funerals, the polished eulogy is admired and the halting one is remembered. Somebody stands up, loses their place, says something plain about a car journey in 1994, and the room goes quiet in a different way.

Speaking from the heart is not the same as speaking without thought. It usually means choosing the smaller, more embarrassing, more particular thing over the impressive general one.

That is why it frightens people. The plain sentence gives you away. It also happens to be the only kind anyone believes.
