I am fine being me


A particular loop runs on the drive home: the rewrite of a conversation, the better version of the thing you said, the joke that would have landed. Everyone has it. Almost nobody mentions it.

Fine is a modest target, and that's what makes it usable. Not radiant, not proud. Fine, as in this is who turned up, and it turns out to be workable. Most self-improvement runs on the assumption that the current model is a draft. Some of it genuinely is worth editing. But there's a difference between improving a thing and apologizing for it, and only one of those makes for a decent evening.
