I am grateful for living in a country where i’m safe from persecution.

Freedom from persecution gets measured in things you never had to consider. You've never chosen your words based on who might be listening, or worried that a belief could cost you your work, your passport, your family.

That absence of calculation is enormous and completely invisible to whoever has it. It's also, historically and geographically, not the norm — for a great many people alive today, that calculation runs constantly in the background.

Nobody needs to feel guilty about an accident of birth. But the right response probably isn't nothing, either.

What you're free to say, someone else isn't. Spend some of it on something that matters.
