Being in charge of something isn't the same as controlling it minute by minute. The landlord of a pub doesn't choose who walks through the door. He chooses the music, the lighting, and who gets asked to leave. Feelings arrive uninvited too, and what's yours is what happens afterwards — who gets a Saturday, what you read at eleven at night, whether you take the long way back from a draining lunch.

Nobody else is running that door. Heavy on the bad days. Enormously useful on all the others.
