Most couples, asked how they met, describe a near miss. A party they nearly skipped. A friend's kitchen at one in the morning. A job taken for entirely the wrong reasons.
What that suggests is less romantic than fate and more useful: you meet people in rooms you have entered. The rooms are the part you control.
The other half is knowing what you need well enough to recognise it while it is standing there being unspectacular — kind on a bad day, easy to be quiet with. Those qualities never announce themselves. They have to be looked for on purpose.
