There is an unusual thing in a wish that leaves room for other people.
Most hoping is narrower, understandably. You want the job, and the other candidate is an obstacle with a name and a photograph. Wanting them to land somewhere good as well takes an effort that does not come naturally when you are frightened about rent.
But it changes what the waiting feels like. A wish with room in it is easier to hold for a long stretch, because it can be partly granted, and because it never requires anybody else's bad news in order to come true.
