Everybody inherits a way of behaving around money, and almost nobody chooses it.

In one house the post got opened at the kitchen table the morning it arrived. In another it went behind the clock and stayed there. Those two children grow up with completely different heart rates at the sight of a window envelope, and neither of them decided anything at all.

Noticing which house you came from is most of the work. It converts what felt like a character flaw back into a habit, and habits have handles on them.

The improvement is rarely about numbers first. It is about being able to look.
