Generosity is measured against what you have, not against what changes hands.

Which is why the round bought by the person having a tight month registers differently from the identical round bought by the person who isn't counting. Everyone at the table knows the difference without anybody discussing it, and it gets remembered for years.

Whether it comes back in money is not really the mechanism. What comes back reliably is the loosening of the grip — the private discovery that you can let something go and the floor holds. Abundance is partly just a measure of what you feel able to give away.
