Chances to help almost never arrive at a good time. The call comes at eleven at night. The friend needs the airport run on the one morning you had planned to sleep.
That is part of the structure, not a flaw in it. If helping were convenient it would not register as help. It would just be scheduling.
There is something worth noticing in being the person who gets called. Somebody looked at their list of names and stopped at yours. That is a quiet piece of information about who you have been to people, and it stays invisible until the phone rings.
