Some trees grow around whatever they meet, a fence wire or a length of chain, and the trunk thickens right where the obstruction was. The wood is denser there.
Growth is not the obstacle disappearing. It is the shape you take in response to it, which is permanent and usually not what you would have chosen.
Nobody feels themselves evolving. It shows only in retrospect, in a situation that would have flattened you three years ago and today merely costs you an afternoon. That difference did not come free. You paid for it, and the payment was the obstacle.
