Picture the grand version: clinics abroad, extreme regimes, remortgaging the house.

In practice the expensive items are smaller and more embarrassing than that. Telling work. Asking a sibling for money. Letting somebody see the state of the bathroom. Pulling out of a wedding you had promised to attend, and saying why.

Those cost standing rather than money, which is exactly why they cost more.

Most people will do almost anything before they will do those four, and those four are often the ones that change a week.
