Assuming the best is not the same as being naive, though the two get confused constantly. The naive version ignores evidence. The useful version starts from good faith and updates the moment someone shows you otherwise.
The reason to start there is practical. Suspicion is self-fulfilling — approach a person as though they're difficult and you'll reliably meet the difficult version of them. Approach them as reasonable and the hit rate is better than you'd expect.
Keep the updating, though. Charity that can't be revised is just a way of getting used.
