I earn plenty of money and love what I do.

Money and liking the work move at different speeds. Money goes in steps: a raise, a new role, a contract that lands. Liking the work goes in fractions — the part of the job you'd do unpaid slowly taking up more of the week.

Most people who love what they do didn't find it whole. They found twenty per cent of it worth defending and spent years pushing that share upward.

If both numbers look bad this month, that's a position rather than a verdict. Positions move, though rarely on the schedule anybody would have chosen.
