Giving keeps you in the stronger position. You choose the timing, the amount, the terms. You stay the competent one in the exchange.
Receiving does none of that. It asks you to admit a shortfall, in front of somebody, and then sit still while they cover it. Plenty of people who give constantly are almost impossible to help, and would describe that as generosity rather than what it more often is - a preference for the comfortable chair.
Enjoying the giving is real and worth having. It is also worth checking, now and then, whether you would let a friend do the same for you without immediately trying to square the account.
