Self-respect is mostly logistical. It lives in what you agree to on a Thursday for a Saturday, whether the dentist appointment gets made, and how long a bad arrangement is allowed to continue before somebody says so.
It's easier to see from outside. Nobody would let a friend take that shift for the fourth week running without at least raising an eyebrow.
Perfect consistency isn't available and isn't the point. The direction is simple enough: the standard you already hold for how other people ought to be treated, applied to the one person you have permanent responsibility for.
