A room shut up all winter goes stale in a way nobody notices until the window opens. Two minutes of cold air, and the room is not warmer or nicer. It is only no longer full of the same air it had yesterday.

Letting go gets discussed as though it were an act of will. Often it is nearer to an emptying — something that has to happen before anything else will fit. You cannot take in a fresh breath while still holding the last one. The out-breath does most of the work, and it is the half nobody practises.
