A useful test of prosperity is how much bad work you are able to turn down. Not the car, not the postcode — the number of things you can decline without having to calculate first.

By that measure it accumulates in strange places. Low overheads are prosperity. A skill that four people in the county have is prosperity. So is a reputation that means the second call comes without an interview. Almost all of it is built long before it can be spent, which is why the people who look suddenly prosperous generally are not.
