A shop assistant was thanked properly, by name, by somebody having the worst day of their year. The thanking took four seconds and cost nothing, and the person doing it was, at that moment, in genuine trouble.

Effect is not the same as state. What you give off is not a readout of the internal weather — which is fortunate, because the internal weather is frequently not something anybody would want broadcast.

People are lit by others all the time with no idea what it cost them. Yours will not be an exception. You simply do not get to see it from where you are standing.
