I release my need to impress others.

You can tell what this costs by where the rehearsing happens. In the car outside the party, running a sentence twice so it lands the right way.

That's genuine labour, and it's spent on an audience that is mostly preoccupied with rehearsing its own sentence.

Underneath the need is usually a decent instinct — wanting to be liked, wanting to belong somewhere. Letting go of the need doesn't mean not caring. It means allowing the belonging to happen on the strength of whoever actually walks in, rather than the version you assembled in the car park.
