Beauty asks less of you than almost anything else does. It requires no good mood, no energy, not even much attention — oil on a wet pavement makes its colours whether or not you are having a decent week.
The seeing is what varies, and the seeing is largely a matter of the eye landing somewhere for two seconds longer than usual. On a bad day it is often the only available pleasure that costs nothing and asks nothing back.
