Affirmation to Kindness I stand up for others.

I stand up for others.

Standing up for somebody rarely looks like the confrontation people imagine. The version that works is quieter: sitting down next to the person nobody sat next to, or saying out loud that it isn't true, and then changing the subject.

It still costs something. The room turns, briefly, and some of the warmth that was pointed at you moves elsewhere for a while.

What makes it worth the temperature drop is that the person being talked about almost never forgets it — and neither does anybody else who was there and wanted to speak and didn't. One person going first changes what's possible for everyone else in the room.
