Imagine a friend handed you the same set of results and asked what you thought. You wouldn't tell them they had brought it on themselves. You wouldn't list what they should have done differently in 2019.
You would probably say something about it being unfair, and then offer to come along to the appointment.
The gap between how that conversation goes and how the internal one goes is enormous, and it is a matter of habit rather than fact. Compassion is not a treatment. It is, at minimum, a way of not spending energy attacking the only body available for the repair.
