A warning light does its job once. The trouble is the ones that stay lit long after the fault has been dealt with — the alarm that was accurate in March and is still running the dashboard in September.

Telling the difference takes a question rather than a mood: is there an action this is pointing at, right now, that isn't being taken? If yes, it's information. If no, it's a light with nothing behind it.

That doesn't switch it off. But it changes what gets done while it's on, and quite often that's the whole of the available progress.
