There's an old arrangement, currently out of fashion, where the work funds the life and is not required to be the life. Somebody clocks off at four, collects a child from the gate, coaches an under-11s side on Sundays, and never once calls any of it a calling.
Sustaining a life is not a small assignment. Rent, shoes, the dentist, the week in a caravan in August.
Nothing about that is a lesser arrangement. A job that covers the life underneath it is doing the thing jobs were invented for.
