Cross a lawn the same way for a summer and you'll wear a path into it. The grass doesn't return the week you stop. It takes a stretch of walking the other route before the ground forgets.
Thoughts run in tracks like that. The one that says this always happens to me is worn deep and requires no effort to fall into, which is exactly why it feels like truth instead of habit.
Changing it isn't a single act of will. It's the unglamorous business of catching the thought mid-sentence, ten times or fifty, and taking the longer way around until the longer way is the one your feet choose on their own.
