On a hospital ward the physios measure recovery in laps of a corridor. Not kilometres. Laps, and sometimes half of one, and the half counts and gets written down.

It is a useful unit outside hospitals too. The step stays real and available even when the distance is not.

You cannot know whether you can do six months. You can generally establish whether you can do the next fifteen minutes.

The answer is usually yes, and the fifteen minutes after that is a separate question you do not have to answer yet.
