Nobody selects their thoughts on the way in. They arrive: dread at three in the morning, an old grudge in the shower, the catastrophic reading of an ordinary test result.
What's actually available is which ones get answered. A thought that gets engaged, argued with, researched at midnight and repeated to three people becomes a tenant.
One that gets noticed and left alone usually moves on within the hour.
So the aim isn't a mind with no dark thoughts in it, since that mind doesn't exist anywhere. It's a mind where the ones about health and steadiness are the ones getting fed, and the rest are allowed to pass through without being offered a room.
