There's a plausible mechanism here that has nothing to do with attracting anything. Grateful people are easier to be around. They thank collaborators, they don't keep score, they're less exhausting over long stretches.
Across years, that changes who stays close and who offers you things. Not because a mindset got rewarded, but because people do respond to being appreciated, and most opportunities travel through people.
That's slow, unromantic, and it actually happens.
Next time someone helps you, tell them specifically what it made possible. Do that for a year and look at who's still around.
