There's a reliable way to read a workplace: the tone people use with whoever is newest, or lowest paid, or in on a temporary contract. It has nothing to do with what those people produced that week.
Basic regard is not a wage. It does not scale with output, and it does not lapse during the quarter you underperformed, though plenty of places behave as though it should.
Somewhere between those two facts sits a useful question about the tone you use on yourself when a week has gone badly.
