Feelings arrive without asking. Someone's remark at eleven is still running at seven that evening, rehearsed in the car with much better lines than you managed at the time.

The choosing happens a layer down from the feeling itself. Whether the rehearsal gets another lap. Whether the day gets retold at the door before your coat is off. Whether the whole thing is handed to somebody who was not there.

Nobody gets a switch.

What people do get is a say in how much of the day travels home with them, and that turns out to be most of what being in charge amounts to.
