Ask certain people where they would like to eat and they genuinely will not tell you. Anywhere. You choose. It reads as easy-going and it is usually something else — a way of never putting a preference down on the table where somebody could look at it and disagree.
That reflex started somewhere, generally in a house where wanting was treated as expensive. No licence is ever issued for desire and nobody has ever been asked to produce one at the door. You are allowed to want the thing you actually want, and to name it out loud, which is by far the harder half.
